Watch TV Online From Other Countries

Streaming TV From Another Country With VPN and CCProxyWatching Streaming TV Online Through Your Friends Computer

I recently emigrated and one of the frustrations I encountered was not being able to watch TV online on websites from my original country.

I would have thought more people from outside the country would want to watch online then inside considering you can just switch your TV on if you’re inside the country. Anyway, that’s the strange logic that the tv production companies, movie makers and sports broadcasting rights organisations have forced upon us.

So I thought I’d share with you the simple few steps I took to watch TV on websites from my old country in my new country.

To achieve this mighty feat, you’re going to need a few things:

  • Your own computer in your current country (Windows, Linux or Mac)
  • A friend or family member who will allow you to use their computer in the country you want to watch TV online from (Windows)

Note: If you don’t know a person in the country you want to watch a stream from then check out Overplay.

Overplay allows you to use their VPN servers in 31 different countries including US, Ireland, Sweden & the UK.

Check it out here.

Assuming you have all of this and your friend is online and ready for your instructions, this should take no time at all!  It may seem like this is a long tutorial but I completed the steps in 15 minutes so that’s a guide.

The Easiest VPN Setup Ever

For those of you who don’t know, a VPN is a Virtual Private Network.  So for the purposes of this article it’s a secure connection between two locations.

In your house right now you are (probably) connected to a router either wirelessly or wired via a cable into an internet router.  As soon as you connect to that router you are essentially on your own home network.  The same applies to your friends house.  So now we’re going to connect them.

We could probably do this without the VPN part but it saves a lot of trouble such as firewall and router configuration and it’s secure so no one else can piggy back or hack your proxy server.

Part 1 – On Your Computer

  1. Go to www.logmein.com and click Create An Account
  2. Click the big green Access Computers Remotely button
  3. Enter your email address, choose a password, select your current country and select No to the IT Support question and click Continue
  4. You’ll be presented with the Add Computer dialog – click the X in the top right corner.  We don’t want to do this.
  5. Confirm the email Logmein sent you.
  6. Now click Network in the left hand navigation menu
  7. Click the green Start Adding Clients button on the right side of the page
  8. Select Install LogMeIn Hamachi² on this computer and click Continue
  9. Click Download Now button (on Mac) or click Install Logmein Hamachi² (on Windows)
  10. Download the file and run the installation accepting all defaults as you go.  When the install is complete, the program will launch.  Don’t do anything in the program yet!  Go to Part 2.

Part 2 – On Your Friend’s Computer

  1. Go to www.logmein.com ask your friend to Login using YOUR login details that you created in Part 1 above.
  2. When logged in, click Network in the left hand navigation menu
  3. Click Add Client
  4. Select Install LogMeIn Hamachi² on this computer and click Continue
  5. Click Download Now button (on Mac) or click Install Logmein Hamachi² (on Windows)
  6. Download the file and run the installation accepting all defaults as you go.  When the install is complete, the program will launch.  Don’t do anything in the program yet!

Part 3 – Create Your Network And Join

  1. On your own computer, go to www.logmein.com and log in to your account
  2. Click Network in the left hand navigation menu
  3. Click Add Network
  4. Give the network a name (your choice)
  5. For Network Type select Gateway and click Continue button
  6. For Join Requests click Accept Automatically
  7. Set a Password to join the network and click Continue
  8. On the next screen, Select a computer to be the gateway for this network, it is crucial that you select your friends computer from the list at the bottom.  Select the radio button to the right of your friends computer and click Continue.
  9. Click Finish.
  10. Take a note of the ID (first column) – you’ll need it soon.
  11. Open LogMeIn Hamachi²
  12. Click Join Existing Network or Join Network
  13. Enter the Network ID – you made of note of it two steps ago, right?  If not, go back into Logmein > Networks > the ID is displayed in the first field to the left of your networks name.
  14. Enter the password you set in step 7 and click OK.

All going well the two computers are now securely connected!

You can verify this by having a look at your Logmein account page > Networks > My Networks > Edit.  You should see the name of your network and two computers listed with green lights.

Part 4 – Download & Install CCProxy

  1. On your friends computer, go to www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/ and click the CCProxy Download button
  2. Run the CCProxy install file that you just download and accept all defaults during the installation
  3. After you click Finish, CCProxy will launch and you will see a green grid.  Click the Options button.
  4. At the bottom of the dialog box, uncheck Auto Detect next to Local IP Address
  5. In the drop down list select your friends actual Local IP Address.  This will likely begin with 192 and will not begin with 5.
  6. Click OK.

Greetings: thanks for putting together such a great guide. I’m trying to set this up at home before leaving for Europe, so I’m using a computer that will stay at home as my gateway. While setting it up, I am getting a conflicting IP address error (on the gateway machine). Is this because I’m setting it up on the same home network? Will the problems disappear when I move my personal (traveling) computer abroad (ie, to a different network), or do I need to find another way around it? Thanks so much.

  2. Giacomo says:

Hi, thanks a lot for that I just wanted to ask a stupid question: does the computer in the home country need to be always on, or once I set this up I can access restricted website even if that computer is off?

    Thanks again

    1. Rosco says:

Hi, the other PC has to be always on.
