Apple Photos: Batch Edit Exif Data inc. Capture Date

Apple Photos LogoI’ve been playing about frustrated a lot recently with Apple Photos!

Since moving from Aperture I’ve really struggled (like so many) with missing functionality that seems so basic in today’s photo management apps.  One can hope it’s ‘on the way’.

For now, one of my biggest challenges was batch updating some fairly basic metadata from photos that were taken with a good old fashioned SLR or even more retro ‘scanned’ images.

For a single image, it’s fairly straightforward using the Get Info dialog but batch editing can be a bit harder to find.

Here’s how to perform batch updates of the location (GPS) data, capture date, time and timezone.

Batch Edit Location (GPS) Data

  1. Open Photos
  2. Select ‘Photos’ from the very top of the left navigator
  3. On the right panel, select multiple photos by
    • Consecutive Photos: clicking the first one, holding down Shift and clicking the last one
    • Random Photos: picking the first one, holding CMD and clicking as many more photos as you wish
  4. Right click any selected photo and choose Get Info
  5. Start typing the location into the last field ‘Assign a location’ and press Enter!

You should now see a map appear below the location box confirming the location.

Get Info Box

Batch Edit Capture Date & Time

  1. Open Photos
  4. Click ‘Image’ menu item on the menu bar > Adjust Date and Time…Image Adjust Date Time
  5. A dialog will appear where you can set the date, time and timezone of the capture date.

Now photos will appear correctly across Apple Photos in places such as Moments, Smart Albums, etc.
