Hi Bert,

It may be possible to disable the pesky prompt by editing the Windows registry directly. I should warn you however that editing the Windows Registry can be dangerous and you should have a full backup before proceeding.

Try these steps:

1. Click Start > Run
2. Type regedit > click OK
3. Browse to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
4. Create the following three new DWORD values as follows:

NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers, Value = 1
RebootRelaunchTimeout, Value = 5a0 (That's FIVE, A, ZERO)
RebootRelaunchTimeoutEnabled, Value = 1
To create a new DWORD value simply right click on the AU folder or right click in side the right hand Window after you have selected the AU folder and choose New > DWORD

If you're unsure how to backup your system before proceeding then check out my new ebook. http://www.proposedsolution.com/anyone_can_backup

Hope this helps.

Regards

I have Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP3 on a Dell Vostro laptop. When I enter gpedit.msc in Run, a box appears saying Windows cannot find it. I searched for a Computer Policy folder (including in hidden files) and none was found. Is there another way to stop this very annoying prompt?
