SKU001.CAB is missing

Looking for SKU001.CAB?

When doing a number of things with Microsoft Office such as reinstalling it, repairing it, installing SP3, etc the error SKU001.CAB is missing may appear looking for a CD or other installation files.

It seems that even if you have the Microsoft Office files on your hard drive or if you insert your original CD that it still can’t find this cab file.

This error may also occur when simply launching any of the applications in Microsoft Office such as Word, Excel or Powerpoint particularaly after an crash or a previous update was applied which is very annoying indeed.

Common Symptoms

  • When re-installing, repairing, upgrading or just launching an application from the Microsoft Office suite the error “SKU001.CAB is missing” appears.

Explanation

This error is occurring because a registry entry is incorrectly set and setup is looking in the wrong place.

Solution – Change CDCACHE Registry Entry

  1. If you still have the error message on your screen then close down all open windows including the error so that you have no programs running.
  2. Click Start > Run
  3. Type regedit and hit ENTER or click OK
  4. You should see the navigation tree in the left pane. Navigate to the following keys:
  5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

    Software

    Microsoft

    Office

    11.0

    Delivery

  6. Inside the Delivery Key there should be one more key which is a long string of numbers for example:

    90103207-6000-11A1-9CEE-1160028683D9

  7. Click on the key and then you should see some entries in the right hand pane.
  8. Double click on the entry CDCache
  9. Change the value to 0
  10. Important Note

Depending on your version of Microsoft Office the registry path may be different.

The above path and delivery key is only examples.

Yours will look similar but not necessarily identical. The important entry to find is the CDCACHE entry.

  11. Click OK and then exit the Registry and retry the MS Office installation.

That was easy!!! The only thing is that when I was looking for the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Microsoft Windows Office 11.0 Delivery” I found it as “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Microsoft Office 11.0 Delivery”… so if you are looking for it, you can just skip the “Windows” folder to locate it! THANK YOU!

    1. Rosco says:

Hey Q…thanks for pointing that out.

The CDCACHE key won’t always be in the same place for everyone but it sure won’t be inside the Windows key so thanks for noticing that.

I’ve updated the solution above to reflect this.

      Cheers

      Rosco

  28. Moran says:

    Thanks for your help.
I am using Windows 7 and office 2003.
The CDCache was under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\ Microsoft\Office\11.0\Delivery
I changed CDCache to 0 and tried again.
I received a different error message ‘error 1311: file not found c:\MSOCache\…\901E0409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9\M4561442.cab’
I copied the file to this folder and everything worked.

    1. Rosco says:

      Hi Moran,
Yes, it looks like the CDCache key is located in a few different places depending on versions, etc.
Thanks for the info on this.
      Best of luck.
