How To Remove MacDefender

MacDefender is not really a virus but more of a cleverly designed app that’s disguised as a real app.

It’s not malicious in such a way that it will delete your data or even send emails to all your friends.

Whoever designed this is basically trying to fool you into paying money for the application similar to the way you might pay for a ‘pro’ version of any app.

The difference here is – there is no pro version – and there is no infection, virus or anything else wrong with your Mac.

Removing MacDefender is realtively simple too.  As it’s just a normal Mac OS X application, it’s stored in the Applications folder but there are a few other steps you need to take to get rid of it completely.

Here’s how to do it:

Quit MacDefender Completely

1.  Click Spotlight – that’s the magnifying glass in the top right corner.

2.  Type Activity Monitor and press enter to open it when you see it in the list

3.  In Activity Monitor, sort the list of processes by Process Name by clicking the column

4.  Locate MacDefender in the list, click once to select it and then click the Quit Process button

5.  Click Force Quit and if prompted, enter your password.

Delete MacDefender

1.  Click Applications folder on your dock

2.  Locate MacDefender and drag it to the Trash

3.  Empty the trash

Remove Last Traces of MacDefender

1.  Click Spotlight – that’s the magnifying glass in the top right corner.

2.  Type Accounts and press enter to open it when you see it in the list

3.  Select your user profile from the left side

4.  Click Login Items tab on the right side

5.  Locate MacDefender in the list and click the minus sign button

That’s it!  All clean again.
