Change Secure Empty Trash on Snow Leopard

Symptoms:

  • Since upgrading to Mac OS X Snow Leopard you have noticed that you can only empty the trash using the Secure option
  • Emptying the trash takes an excessive amount of time on Mac OS X Snow Leopard
  • When you open the Trash the button to empty reads Empty Secure.  There is no Empty button

 

Explanation:

Finder Preferences Pane

The OS X Finder preference “Empty Trash securely” is enabled.

 

Solution:

  1. Open OS X’s Finder by clicking the Finder icon in your dock
  2. Open Finder Preferences by clicking Finder menu, Preferences or by pressing CMD+, on your keyboard
  3. Click Advanced
  4. Clear the check mark for the option “Empty Trash securely”
  5. Close Preferences

    Thank you … this solved my problem … Secure Empty Trash would not delete files that had been marked as Locked, as as others have said, saved tons of time.
