Xcode Installation Alert – Close iTunes During Installation

iTunes Xcode Install Error

Xcode Installation Alert Close iTunes

‘In order to continue installation, please close the following application: iTunes’.

It seems a bug is affecting the Xcode 4.1 installer on Mac OSX 10.7 Lion.  It may affect other versions also.  The installer is reporting that iTunes needs to be closed even though it already is.

This is being caused by the iTunes Helper app that is running in the background.

Here’s how to resolve it.

Shutdown iTunes Helper App Using Activity Console

If you’re not familiar with Activity Console, it’s a Mac system utility using for monitoring open applications.  It can also forcibly close apps with relative ease.

  1. Launch Activity Monitor by clicking Spotlight (magnifying glass in the top right corner of your screen) and typing Activity…hit Enter when Activity Monitor app is highlighted.
  2. When Activity Monitor opens, sort the list of apps by name by clicking the Process Name column.
  3. Locate the process called iTunes Helper, highlight it in the list and click the Quit Process button.
  4. Click Quit to confirm.  After a few seconds the Xcode installer should continue automatically.

Thanks for this. This almost solved my problem!

The only thing to add is if you have several user accounts, make sure you select a’all processes’ at the top to reveal any instances of iTunes or the Helper running in the background in other users log ins.
